acid

It’s been known since the 1950’s in scientific literature that stomach ulcers are much more common in people who are blood type O.  Why is that?

Well, if you’re blood type O it may not be surprising to find out that type Os make significantly more stomach acid that any of the other blood types.  Bs are next, followed by ABs, and finally As who make very little stomach acid.  For more information, click here.

Some people experience better health when they follow the high protein/low carb diets.  The effects include weight loss, increased energy, better digestion, improved cholesterol, and even lower overall stress.  But you may know others who’ve tried these diets with catastrophic results-- weight gain, fatigue, digestive disorders, elevated cortisol, and even damage to major organs like the liver and kidneys.  The same is true for all-veggie diets.  Doctors have documented results of patients who have both done better and worse on these kinds of diets.  The science is inconclusive because the studies all vary based on individuality.  And that’s the key- Individuality!

Blood type O digests meat very efficiently, with rare exceptions (usually due to otherwise poor health or special medical conditions).  Since Os make more stomach acid than any other blood type, the acid (a critical component in meat digestion) helps to break down the protein.  The body can then further break down and absorb the amino acids from the meat which fuel the muscles, brain, and just about every other biological process in the body.  When Os eat too many grains and not enough protein, their metabolism has to shift into a harder gear.  It’s like trying to drive up a mountain in overdrive.  You could do it, but not without a lot of wear and tear on your engine!  Since grains and carbohydrates require a different set of enzymes and digestive fluids to break down, many type Os feel sluggish or otherwise “un-well” when they rely on these foods for their nutrition.  But when a type O eats plenty of fresh, lean protein balanced with the right fruits and vegetables, their metabolism kicks into gear and they can expect to regain that youthful energy and optimism that might have decayed over the years.  Click to learn more about type O!

Blood type A has a harder time digesting meat than all the other blood types.  Since type As make the least amount of stomach acid, meat has a hard time being broken down and utilized by the body.  In fact, red meat actually causes the arteries to “flap” open and closed in type As, while the white blood cells carry away the toxins from this dangerous food.  If you’ve ever heard that red meat builds up plaque in the blood vessels, leading to heart disease and stroke, this is absolutely true for type A.  Medical research has shown a strong correlation with heart disease and blood type A for many decades, yet many doctors and nutritionists still assume that lean meat is a good source of protein for everyone.  The good news if you’re type A is that you make special enzymes in your liver and pancreas that other blood types lack, which allows you to digest plant material, legumes, beans, nuts, and other protein-containing foods with ease.  The A digestive system is able to take full advantage of all the vitamins, antioxidants, phytochemicals and cancer-fighting compounds that so many plants provide, while obtaining the optimal amount of protein from foods like seeds, nuts, beans and tofu.  When eating a balanced diet of these life-giving foods, the type A can expect to live long, healthy and stress-free.  Click to learn more about type A!

Blood type B is the epitome of the omnivore.  While closer to the O in terms of meat eating, they also can enjoy foods from all the other food groups-- including dairy.  Type Bs, like Os, make higher levels of an enzyme called Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase (IAP).  Along with higher stomach acid, this enzyme further aids in the digestion of animal protein.  It splits cholesterol and helps to absorb calcium.  Medical literature is full of references to IAP and how blood type is a key variable in its production.  People who are blood type B can eat red meat and poultry (excluding chicken), nuts, grains, dairy and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to obtain their best health.  If you’re type B, your health problems are usually a result of lectins in the diet from the wrong foods, rather than an imbalance of meat vs. carbs.  If you find yourself out of balance, your health issue tend to be with the nervous system and autoimmunity.  Viruses often look like blood type B, which is also an area of caution.  Without the correct diet sometimes your body doesn’t detect viral infections as quickly, leading to greater susceptibility.  The good news is that Bs are rapid healers, and can use their minds in a powerful way to connect the body and spirit.  And since type Bs statistically live the longest of all the blood types with the fewest health problems, you have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future with the Blood Type Diet.  Just remember to take time to meditate, be creative, avoid lectins, and your body will do the rest.  Click to learn more about type B!

Blood type AB is more like type A than type O as far as meat digestion.  As kind of a “hybrid” blood type that’s only been around for the last thousand years, ABs possess qualities of both A and B.  If you’re AB you only make slightly more stomach acid and IAP than type A.  You should still avoid red meat, as the toxins and artery damage can lead to serious health problems in the future.  However, foods like turkey and seafood are an excellent source of protein to complement your vegetable and fruit intake.  ABs should be careful to stay away from packaged, processed meats, as the nitrites and nitrates can lead to cancer of the stomach and otherwise ill-effects.  Eat Right for Your Type outlines all the best foods that will strengthen your immune system and boost your metabolism.  You should be careful of lectins, and be sure to engage in lots of relaxing exercise for stress control-- like Yoga and Tai Chi, balanced with vigorous cardiovascular training.  Unfortunately ABs tend to be more virus-prone like type B, with autoimmunity as a risk factor.   That’s why the research with the Blood Type Diet is so exciting- given the correct diet and lifestyle strategies, you can live life to its fullest without worry!  Type ABs are considered some of the most interesting of blood types, often described as emotional, passionate, friendly, trusting and empathetic.  Learn to implement these strategies and you can expect a life of youthfulness and adventure.  Click to learn more about type AB!

This is important in nutrition, because it determines how much meat someone should eat.  You’ve seen the Adkins diet and heard about the China study- two completely different diet systems.  One of them relies on high protein consumption, and the other is basically a vegetarian diet.  Why are there so many conflicting diets?  You would think that scientists would have figured out by now which one is better for your health.  Well that’s the problem- science has figured out which one is better, and they both are!
